With an area of 4,628.57141 km², Hualien County is the largest county in Taiwan which is about 1/8 the entire size of Taiwan island. It has a population of approximately 350,000 people and it is comprised of a city, two townships and ten minor townships. It is located in the eastern region of Taiwan and is facing the Pacific Ocean . It has the largest port in the east coast. Because of its secluded location, it is one of the last places in Taiwan to be settled by the Han Chinese.

Hualien was originally called Kilai based on The Record of Hualien County. During the early 20 th century, the Japanese administration decided to change the name Kilai to Karen since in japanese Kilai sounds like the japanese word which means “dislike”. In the late 20 th century, the Republic of China Kuomintang Administration promoted the Mandarin Chinese reading Hualien which sounds like Huilan meaning “recurring waves”.
Hualien County's economy is based on its tourism industry and its mining of marble and limestone. Hualien County 's capital is Hualien City with an approximate population of about 110,000 people in 35,000 households. It has an area of 29.41 km² and an average annual temperature of around 24°. Its geographic coordinates are 121°36'23 East, 23°58'20 North. It houses six colleges, twelve senior high schools, four middle schools and 16 elementary schools. It has 37 churches and 31 temples. Hualien has a commercial airport for domestic flights and international chartered flights. It serves as a transit location for people going to Taroko National Park.
