hualien taiwan political introduction

The Republic of China (ROC) is known today as “Taiwan” or “Chinese Taipei” and is different from the People's Republic of China (PRC). ROC used to govern the whole of China before the PRC took control of mainland China after the Chinese Civil War. Since then, ROC's jurisdiction is Taiwan's island groups, Pescadores, Kinmen and Matsu.

In 1928, ROC was under the authoritarian dictatorship of the Kuomintang (KMT). Between the 1950s and 1960s they brought reforms that led to economic growth despite the threats of war and unrest. The government worked for a transition to a democratic government in the 1980s and 1990s with their first presidential election in 1996 and another election in 2000 electing the first non KMT president.

As to the current political status of Taiwan ROC, the PRC still claims the illegitimacy of the government established by the ROC. The One China Policy has the PRC pressuring all its member states to give no official recognition to Taiwan. China's desire of reunification and its strained relationship with Taiwan continue to be a major concern in ROC's political issues.

The KMT government's flee to Taiwan brought with them the entire gold reserve and foreign currency reserve. Along with them came also the intellectuals and business people. Both factors contributed to laying the foundation for the so-called “Taiwan's Economic Miracle” wherein ROC experienced economic growth and industrialization.

Currently, Taiwan is one of the industrialized and developed countries in Asia and has even been dubbed as one of the “East Asian Tigers”. It has a capitalist economy with export on technological products as its main core in revenue generation.
