The Marble and Travel Industry in Hualien

Hualien's isolated location has made it depend on its marble and travel industry. It has turned to nature for its local economy. It is the cement capital of Taiwan because of its quarried limestone. It is dubbed as the “City of Marble”, being one of the world's largest producer of marble. In 2000, it was noted that around nine million tons of marble was produced by the quarrying activities around Taroko Gorge.

The city's hotels and buildings have prominent marble structures in them and even their sidewalks have slabs of this stone. The Temple of Eastern Purity was built entirely on marble to show the gratitude of the people for the abundance of marble in their area. The city is lined with numerous stores and shops and even night markets selling everything “marble”.

Because of Hualien's relaxed atmosphere it is a favorite travel destination locally and internationally. Taiwan locals visit Hualien for an escape from the busy lifestyle in the city.
