The Taroko Gorge, located in the northern part of Hualien City , is considered as one of Taiwan 's prime tourist attractions. It is a 19 km long canyon, mainly made up of granite and marble. The area is identified as the Taroko Gorge National Park, one of the national parks in Taiwan.

The name Taroko is from the aborigine's language Truku which means “magnificent and splendid”. This was the very first word that a Truku tribesman cried out a long time ago when he was enthralled and captivated by the beauty and wonder of the Pacific while he was at the gorge. In the Taroko National Park, you will be fascinated by the majestic mountains, towering cliffs, magnificent waterfalls, and water rapids. This well-preserved natural spectacle is abundant with flora and fauna and is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

The entrance to the park is basically free and you can find here The Eternal Spring Shrine, Buluowan, Swallow Grotto, The Tunnel of Nine Turns, Jinheng Park, The Bridge of the Kind Mother, and Tianxiang. The place is perfect for a walk or a hike while enjoying nature's wonders. At the top of the gorge, you can find Wenshan Hot Springs.

You have several options to get to Taroko Gorge National Park. You can take one of the numerous bus tours being offered which includes a complete itinerary of the places you will be visiting. There are also non-tourist buses for those who wish to explore by themselves. Another option would also be to rent a car or a scooter if you are up for some adventure.
